Nikolasa Tejero featured with UTC groups

Dr. Stuart Benkert, UTC director of bands, has programmed what he calls “the most exciting concert to date” for a combined performance of the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Monday night’s concert will open with a salute to the U.S. Army, John Philip Sousa’s “The U.S. Field Artillery.”

Graduate student Dean D’Andrea will conduct a setting of Scott Joplin’s “Cascades” before the band plays “Necrology” by Nashville composer Gary Powell Nash. Graduate student Tiffany Feltner will conduct Bjork’s “Dancer in the Dark.”

The Wind Ensemble will play the five movements of Vincent Persichetti’s Serenade No. 1 for 10 Winds, which Benkert said explores uncommon harmonizations and rhythmic structures.

UTC clarinet professor Nikolasa Tejero will be the featured soloist on Scott McAllister’s “Black Dog (Rhapsody for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble”). This rhapsody is based on the Led Zeppelin tune of the same name.

“Professor Tejero makes you believe this song was written for electric clarinet. She is so energetic and a pleasure to watch perform. You will not believe the range of colors and rhythms she is able to coax from her instrument,” Benkert said.

The symphonic band returns to the stage for the final portion of the concert, performing Paul Hart’s “Cartoon” and the fourth movement of Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”

Benkert said Hart scores music for movies in Los Angeles and he wrote “Cartoon” for an imaginary cartoon.

“The audience will listen to this piece and their minds will be led to scenes that were common in cartoons from the 1950s and ’60s,” Benkert said.
