Government price-setting

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., wants a new law or federal regulations to keep airlines from charging a fee for carry-on bags.

Nobody “enjoys” paying fees for checked or carry-on bags, but government prohibition of such fees would only mean higher ticket prices.

Consumers who dislike the costs of flying on one airline should choose another airline more to their liking, but government can’t legislate away costs. If it could, why not declare all goods and services “free”? Congress can’t do that, of course, because producers would stop producing when they couldn’t recoup their costs.

Benefits have costs, and it is better for the free market — not government — to decide those costs.
