Some cross line toward sedition

There have always been fanatics, usually undereducated, misinformed and unbalanced. It doesn’t take much to stir them up. Give them a “cause” and they often turn violent.

The conservatives are inciting these people to sedition, using words like “government control,” “socialism,” and “death panels.” People like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Mitch McConnell and John Boenher use distortions and lies to incite fear and anger in their greed for power and control.

We now have at least 157 groups of these fanatics now marching, protesting and even using death threats against anyone who disagrees with them. This could be very dangerous, conceivably becoming a civil war.

Those who call themselves Christian should stop listening to rabble rousers and read the Bible. Jesus would never approve such tactics. He is the Prince of Peace. God is not the author of confusion nor of the fear, hate, deceits, greed and spite that is tearing this nation apart. Freedom of speech is one thing, sedition is another. I think some are crossing the line.

Henry invaluable as commissioner

Commissioner Larry L. Henry deserves another term on the County Commission. He has earned our confidence as an invaluable member of the commission through his full-time commitment to get the job done. His tireless efforts have helped take good proposals off the table and into the community. He is always present for any event, large or small, when his constituents ask him to attend. He sincerely cares about every one of us.

It is a “must” that we re-elect Commissioner Larry L. Henry on May 4. Please go to the polls and cast your vote for the best person for our district! He has served well!

Return Levi as trustee

We seldom hear good news these days — a lot of negative happenings. As I’m now a resident at Parkwood Retirement facility, I try to keep up with what is going on, as I did when I was at old City Hall.

First, I’d like to ask for votes for my long-time friend, Carl Levi, to serve as county trustee.

He has a proven record.

I wish to thank those who were responsible for the recent honor bestowed on the Rev. Paul McDaniel and Mr. James Mapp and to the one and only Luther Masingill, all dear friends of mine. I wish for them only the best.

Why is so much needed for race?

Congratulations are in order for the Robin Smith campaign for raising campaign funds totaling nearly $400,000!

My own praise, though, seems wholly inadequate when compared to the to the chest-thumping, whooping and quite enthusiastic self-congratulating originating from the candidate herself.

It is somewhat surprising, though, that so much cash is needed to squash the “cynical and wasted effort” of the other apparently meaningless campaigns, as the not-so-diplomatic treasurer for her campaign eloquently stated in a recent interview.

I am also puzzled that, having once been the uniting force for the entire state Republican Party as its head, she now finds all her fellow candidates irrelevant.

Moore’s inspiration will be missed

Mary Sprague Moore, daughter of Brainerd Baptist founder, Rev. Claude Sprague, and secretary extraordinaire for Drs. Fred and Bruce Marsh for over 60 years, is now at home with the Lord she loved and served for nearly a century. She died April 11, 2010, at 971/2 years of age, and will be greatly missed by her family and wide, wide circle of friends.

I have a file of letters I keep to boost my spirits and ego — mostly filled with Mary’s loving and encouraging notes that grew increasingly illegible as her eyesight diminished.

A couple of years ago she sent Christmas cards with letters of faith and encouragement to about 160 friends. Mary loved, encouraged, affirmed, entertained, inspired, and prayed for many, including college students from her church, some of whom made her their honorary grandmother in their weddings.

When Mary retired at 90 after faithfully working as a secretary for my father-in-law and husband for over 60 years, she bought a computer and joined the YMCA. No rocking chair for this granny — at 89 she even surveyed the Rockies in a hot air balloon! I will treasure my friendship with this remarkable lady and join the many who will miss her greatly.

GOP concern not for the little man

In one of his many diatribes, the Free Press editor falsely says “Democrats ignored the will of the American people and passed ObamaCare.”

If he had any respect for honesty, he would have said “Democrats ignored the Republicans and passed ObamaCare.” But then, honesty has never been his policy.

President Obama was elected with a mandate to reform a runaway health care industry and a corrupt financial system. When the Republicans talk about health care reform, they’re not talking about our health care. They’re worried about having to stand in the same line that some of us are just now going to be able to stand in. How unfair.

The Republicans’ idea of financial reform is let it be, the free market will take care of itself. The free market is not free when it can be manipulated.

If you hear a Republican saying he or his party is concerned about the little man, after you’ve stopped laughing, think “wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
