Staff Report
Scientists and ecology experts from across the region will race against time this weekend to see how many species can be counted during a 24-hour biological survey.
The count will take place from 3 p.m. today to 3 p.m. Saturday at Chattanooga Nature Center and Reflection Riding Arboretum & Botanical Garden, adjoining properties at 400 Garden Road at the foot of Lookout Mountain. Providing support for this third annual BioBlitz are the Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain Conservancy and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Visitors can observe scientists at work and take part in free programs, including a guided bird and butterfly walk and bird presentation. Additionally, guests can take home a Backyard BioBlitz guide to do their own surveys.
As a festival, educational event, scientific endeavor and contest, the BioBlitz is a chance to learn about the rich floral and fauna of the region and discover how to reduce the human impact on the environment, according to organizers.
