Neighbors rally for Dollar store

A zoning panel will consider a proposal Monday to build a $1 million Family Dollar store in Glenwood, at the corner of Derby Circle and East Third Street.

For 20 years, the store has been located one block away but lost its lease, costing the neighborhood its only grocery provider, according to a news release.

Developer Ed Cagle Jr. canvassed the neighborhood and got 1,200 signatures, or 65 percent of residents, calling for a new store to be built to replace the old one, he said. The store will be built on a vacant lot, but needs zoning approval to proceed.

The proposal before the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission is to build a 9,100-square-foot store that will expand the grocery portion of the layout from 500 to 2,500 square feet, and will stock bread, milk and frozen food for the first time.

VW’s U.S. sales jump in July

Volkswagen of America Inc. on Tuesday reported July sales rose 16 percent over the same month a year ago.

Mark Barnes, interim president of Volkswagen of America, said sales “provided another solid step in the right direction for our growth strategy.”

VW sold 23,880 total units in July for its 13th consecutive month of sales growth. Year-to-date, Volkswagen’s sales have risen 27.5 percent, according to the company.

Credit, sales boost auto sales

DETROIT – Automakers posted higher U.S. sales last month, a sign that Americans are still willing to buy big-ticket items even though concerns linger about the economy and hiring.

After a sluggish June, sales rose slightly for General Motors Co. and Chrysler. Foreign-based companies such as Toyota and Honda posted bigger gains. Ford, meanwhile, had flat sales.

Sales were boosted by easy credit and new models.
