Letters to the Editor – 2

Cartoons meant to promote ideas

Often I read letters where the reader is so offended by Clay Bennett’s work that they write a letter in outrage, or worse, threaten to unsubscribe.

The letter option, in my opinion, is inane or silly. I honestly don’t believe Mr. Bennett or the Times Free Press wants to alienate any readers, rather to promote ideas and feedback. I feel, at the paper, that readers come first, followed by advertisers, employees, creditors and shareholders, in that order.

We, as subscribers and occasional readers, are lucky to have a daily paper that offers both a liberal and conservative point of view. This allows us to choose. Thank God we live in America! Tolerance is defined by Webster’s as “recognition of and respect or the opinions, beliefs, or actions of others.” Therefore, tolerance is key to the principles of the First Amendment to the Constitution.

As a reader, you may or may not agree with Mr. Bennett’s work, but remember that any and all satirical cartoons are supposed to be thought provoking and edgy. Satire is supposed to stir things up and promote feedback with a healthy exchange of ideas.
