Green tied for first in State Am

GALLATIN, Tenn. – After moving up into a tie for second place Wednesday in the second round of the Tennessee State Amateur golf tournament at Fairvue Plantation, former Rhea County High School standout Hunter Green and Jonathan Fly of Memphis shot 3-under-par 68s Thursday on the Foxland Course and rose to a first-place tie at 9-under 204 with one round to go. Marshall Talkington of Jackson and Jason Millard of Murfreesboro, a Green teammate at Middle Tennessee State, are third and fourth at 206 and 208. McMinnville’s Brett Patterson and Lookout Mountain’s Steve Johnson are tied for 17th at 215 after 69s, and Signal Mountain’s Tom Baird and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player Steven Fox are among those tied for 21st at 217.

Baseball

* Wes Hodges’ career with the Colorado Rockies was brief. He never even made it to Colorado Springs, where the Rockies’ Class AAA team is located. Instead, the former Baylor School and Georgia Tech standout was reacquired by the Cleveland Indians. Evidently, when the Rockies assigned Hodges to Triple-A, they took him off their 40-man roster and Cleveland was able to pick him back up. After 10 days off (with pay), Hodges is headed back to the Indians’ Class AAA team in Columbus, where he was last week when the Indians put him on waivers.

Track

* University of Tennessee star Phoebe Wright from Signal Mountain has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor track scholar athlete of the year, and UTC’s Anneli Uys from Australia also made the Division I all-academic team. The men’s and women’s teams at UTC and the UT women’s squad earned team honors from the coaches organization. Wright, a Red Bank High School graduate, follows former teammate Sarah Bowman (2008 and ’09) as the top overall women’s indoor runner. Wright, who is scheduled to graduate from UT in December, has a 3.97 cumulative grade point average while majoring in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology, as well as ecology and evolutionary biology. She was the 2010 NCAA indoor and outdoor 800-meter champion and helped in record relays as well. Uys has a 3.74 GPA and had a 4.0 last fall. The Lady Mocs were honored for a 3.365 GPA, the Mocs for a 3.294.

Auto Racing

* Southern Regional Racing Series races are scheduled tonight at Boyd’s Speedway and Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway. The one at Cleveland has been dubbed the Hot Summer Nights 40 and pays $3,000 to win. North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth won’t have Super Late Models on Saturday but will run its other divisions.
