On the menu

Where: Blue Plate Diner, 191 Chestnut St.

What: This eatery puts a twist on the traditional bacon, lettuce with its Summertime BLT. It has all the expected ingredients, but is keeping things local. The great bacon comes from internationally-famous Benton’s Farms in Madisonville, Tenn.; the bread comes from Niedlov’s Breadworks on Main Street. And even the basil mayonnaise that brings an excellent, tangy flavor to the sandwich, is made from free-range eggs from River Ridge Farms in Meigs County. The tomatoes come from River Ridge, as well. And the basil comes from Blue Plate’s own garden. “Conversations about local food are catching on and growing as never before,” said Rob Gentry, owner of the Blue Plate. “For years, I’ve been driving to area farms to find authentically local ingredients. Now that they are more readily available, we can keep pushing local dishes like this one.”

Price: $9.50 (comes with homemade chips).
