Way cool

For the first time since July 18, Chattanooga residents were spared 90-degree temperatures when Tuesday’s high reached only 89 degrees.

The 29-day string of temperatures reaching 90 degrees or higher is the fourth-longest on record, said David Gaffin, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn.

The dip in temperatures is not a harbinger of cooler autumn winds, though. Chattanooga residents will have to endure a few more weeks of summer heat and rain as August comes to a close.

There is a 60 percent chance of showers and storms through Friday with highs around 90 degrees, said David Karnes, meteorologist for WRCB-Channel 3.

Though the chance of severe weather is slim, those who live near creeks and streams need to be aware of possible flooding, warns meteorologist Doug Schneider at the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn.
