Male Call
I hear it all the time. In the early morning. In the evening. Late at night. It starts as a rumble and then crescendos into a long high-pitched whine down my street and then down the next street.
It’s my neighbor’s motorcycle. And it is driving me and my neighbors insane. I bet this dude thinks it’s cool to wind-and-whine every gear and disrupt the entire neighborhood. Everyone has to pay attention to the auditory assault – and, therefore, him and his uber-coolness.
And I bet he thinks chicks dig it. Uh huh. Yeah. That’s why we chicks are rolling our eyes (and covering our ears) as he rockets foolishly by at Mach 1.
Oh, you gentlemen of the whining motorcycles; the roaring, sky-high pick-ups; and the wheezing, souped-up, sport-tuned car engines, you need to know that we ladies are hip to your game. And we are not impressed.
I don’t know why certain men think they have to go to loud and silly extremes to prove their coolness to themselves and the women they want to impress.
Because really, we women aren’t that hard to impress. I know that sounds like crazy talk, but we all know the truth is usually stranger than fiction.
What really impresses women is a man of quiet, confident coolness: A man who on his way to play golf stops by the coffee shop where he knows his girlfriend is going later and pre-pays for her. A man who gets up in the middle of the night to take care of the crying baby – or to walk the dog in 20-degree weather – without waking up his sleeping wife or girlfriend. A man who finds a good deal on a car his wife wants and spends an entire weekend secretly driving it from Dallas home to Nashville to surprise her.
Cool, huh? And all true stories of real men. These cool cats impressed their wives and girlfriends with nothing more than thoughtfulness. Each story is a gesture that says “I thought of you, and wanted to do something for you. Because you are wonderful and I adore you.”
See, I told you we women aren’t that hard to impress. Just be cool. And nothing is cooler than kindness and thoughtfulness. Now if only my neighbor would be so kind and thoughtful to my ears – and his motorcycle’s transmission.
