Do you remember the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books?
An artful evening at the Hunter Museum, hosted by Avant-art, is kind of like that.
Those in attendance may vote on one of three themes, the winner of which will be the subject of a curator-led discussion.
“It’s two to three works, max,” said curator of education Adera Causey, “and the group will talk about them, so it’s really them talking more than me. I’m kind of guiding them. They’re looking at the work of art not so much from an artist’s biography but how it relates to their world today. The themes we picked were fun and young and light.”
Possible themes include “Love Is All You Need,” “Singing the Blues” and “A Night on the Town.” The art selections will be made once the theme is chosen. Causey said she would enjoy the opportunity to incorporate more than one theme, including a combination of love and the blues.
“I think all three of them have a lot of energy and a lot of possibility, and I think people are going to get more out of it if they pick it,” she said. “When you think about it, ‘love is all we need’ isn’t just the embrace of a man and a woman, and when we think about it, even embraces of men and women aren’t often what they seem on the surface.”

She named Alfred Eiesenstaedt’s famous Life magazine image of a sailor kissing a nurse on VJ Day as a prime example.
The evening is a low-key opportunity for members of the community to meet one another and spend time chatting about art.
“It’s a very comfortable way to meet people, as opposed to having to have some kind of a forced conversation about who you are and what you do.”
In other words, it’s not speed-dating.
Avant-art is a group of young and young-at-heart Chattanoogans who “bridge Chattanooga’s vibrant art and social scenes and make the arts accessible to the community through a lively mix of social events,” according to the Hunter’s website.
