Shock of massive deaths

Most of us have a sympathetic feeling when we are driving along and stop at the side of the street when a funeral procession is passing by – even though we don’t know the person who has died.

But who can understand the far-too-frequent occasions of distant, massive deaths.

Almost daily, we read in our newspaper about terrible tragedies in many parts of our world – fortunately most of the time not close to us.

How can we grasp the effect on fellow human beings of headlines from Mexico City telling us that “Mexican drug cartel massacres 72 migrants”?

Or “Attacks across Iraq kill 55”?
