We value our Hamilton County school board members. We appreciate their very important, conscientious and sometimes difficult service.
Each school board member is paid $10,372.70 a year. But we don’t believe their part-time jobs justify retirement pensions.
Calculated at $750 multiplied by each member’s years of service, a pension may run to several thousand dollars.
Many taxpayers have questioned pensions for a part-time job. So with some heat having been generated by the issue, and after some too-quick board action and confusion about pensions, the members of the school board wisely have decided to take a new vote on the matter at a meeting Tuesday night.
We praise school board members for their willingness to serve, and we congratulate them for winning election. But we agree with many taxpayers that pensions for part-time service are not appropriate.
