Regents deny funding request for Marion tech center

KIMBALL, Tenn. – Chattanooga State’s bid for $10 million in federal stimulus money to build the initial phase of a satellite campus in Marion County has failed.

Though the Tennessee Board of Regents yesterday approved $9 million for Chattanooga State to buy 15 acres of land owned by Olan Mills next to its Chattanooga campus, they turned down another request to buy 40 acres between Kimball and Jasper along U.S. Highway 41.

County officials said they still hope the tech center will eventually become a reality.

“The proposal that was submitted on behalf of Marion County was not approved by the Board of Regents,” Marion County attorney Billy Gouger said. “That does not mean we don’t still have some opportunities available for a Chattanooga State campus on that site.”
