Unspeakable murders

All kinds of crimes are outrageous and disturbing.

Burglaries are terrible, involving criminal entry of a home or business. Robberies are worse, since they involve personal confrontations. Home invasions may combine the worst of both.

But in the news this week was a story from New Haven, Conn., that told about the murders of a mother and her two daughters, with the father, Dr. William Petit Jr., being beaten with a bat, but surviving.

The killer-invader was tried, convicted and justly sentenced to be executed.

“I am tormented and have nightmares about what happened in that house,” killer Steven Hayes said.

“I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused,” he lamented.

The killer was condemned to die.

But surely, the surviving innocent victim received the worst “sentence” — the rest of his life without his wife and their two daughters.
