Jackets try to end state-title drought

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets will attempt to end northwestern Georgia’s 36-year high school football championship drought when they face, for the third consecutive season, the Buford Wolves at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Georgia Dome. Calhoun has represented the area three times in the past five seasons but has lost each time and will be seeking its first title since winning the Class C championship in 1952.

The area was rich in championship hardware from Calhoun’s 1952 win until Trion’s 7-0 Class B victory over Lincoln County in 1974. Led by Rossville’s three titles, the area won a total of seven championships. Since that ’74 Trion win, however, 13 area teams have finished as state runners-up.
