U.N. cowardice

We noted previously that Communist China has threatened other countries with “consequences” if they send a representative to the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Norway today. China is upset that the Peace Prize is going this year to a man it has imprisoned for calling for liberty for the Chinese people.

Well, sadly, Communist China’s threats got the desired “results”: Nearly two dozen nations will not attend the Peace Prize ceremony.

But what is more telling is that the top “human rights” official at the U.N. will stay away from the event, too. Navi Pillay, the so-called U.N. high commissioner for human rights, said she had a previous engagement and wouldn’t be able to attend.

A previous engagement? The date of the ceremony is the same every year, Dec. 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish scientist for whom the Nobel Prizes are named. It seems unlikely that the most important “human rights” authority at the U.N. wouldn’t have been aware of that date when she was scheduling her activities.

This is one more example of the U.N. kowtowing to abusers of human rights and turning its back on brave individuals who promote freedom.
