New design guidelines likely set by spring

The town of Signal Mountain’s Design Review Commission is making its New Year’s resolution early this year, vowing to conclude its consolidation and clarification of design standards.

A public meeting will likely take place in February, with the finalized work coming before the Town Council sometime this spring in order to be voted into law.

“We wanted to give you an update and let you know what we’re doing,” DRC chairwoman Karen Rennich told council members during their November work session. “If you have any guidance or questions, please let us know.”

Councilman Dick Gee questioned where the aesthetic the DRC is tasked with upholding is coming from and whether a firm endorsement of this by the council is advisable before the work reaches its final stages.

“It’s just sort of the cart and horse, I’m trying to get it in the right order,” he said. “I’m concerned what’s guiding us is that very big and abstract [concept] and you’re writing ordinances and preparing ordinances and using that as a guideline that really hasn’t been agreed upon by the town.”
