Eighty-two years ago this week, a whoosh of air ushered in the beginning of what would become one of the Chattanooga area’s signature tourist attractions.
With that whoosh of air, a worker excavating an elevator shaft in an attempt to reach the sealed-off Lookout Mountain Cave discovered what would become Ruby Falls.
This Thursday, the first 82 visitors can get the complete cave and waterfall tour for $2, the same price visitors paid when the caverns opened to the public in 1930, according to Meagan Jolley, public relations manager for Ruby Falls.
Visitors on Discovery Day will receive a flier with cave facts and a vintage-style postcard, she said.
