One of the area’s most versatile high school football players has decided to continue his career at one of the perennial powers in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.
Following a weekend visit to the campus in Boone, N.C., McMinn County’s Tevin McDermott will sign with Appalachian State today.
“I think they really like how versatile he is,” Cherokees coach Bo Cagle said. “He’ll probably start out as a defensive back and return kicks and punts, but he can play pretty much anywhere on the field.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound McDermott finished last season with 109 total tackles, nine for loss, and returned two of his four interceptions 100 yards for touchdowns. He also had more than 1,200 offensive yards and 15 touchdowns.
“I really liked the reputation their program has, and I’m excited to be a part of it,” said McDermott, who also had offers from Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and South Carolina State.
n Central High linebacker Preston Womack will sign today with regional NCAA Division II power Carson-Newman College, and Purple Pounders teammate Deountre Davis will sign with LaGrange College.
