Town Talk

“The inseparable twin of racial injustice is economic injustice.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

HEARD ON THE TOWN

THEIR MISSION IS simple — to entertain. The Roaring Fifties, a group of 22 local singers, spend much of their spare time singing in area nursing/assisted-living homes, health-care facilities, civic groups and class reunions.

Why? They love to entertain, said member Joyce Moser.

“To add to the entertainment, costumes are always a part of the program,” she said. “Special appearances by Elvis, Ernest Tubb, Johnny Cash or Minnie Pearl always delight the audience. Recently, Kaw-Liga, the wooden Indian, has been a big hit for the group. Kaw-Liga and the Indian Maid are both in full Indian dress for the performance.”

Ms. Moser said the group’s typical hourlong program is always well received.

“The skits and comedy will bring a smile to the face and the gospel songs that we all grew up with will bring a tear to the eye,” she said. “A waltz or lively two-step by members of the group is always included in each program.”

It’s just “good, clean fun,” Ms. Moser said. “As much as the audiences enjoy the program, I must admit they couldn’t possibly have more fun than we have in putting on the show. We have been together as a group for so long that we are almost like family. Several members are married couples; we have a brother and a sister that are members and we have two bothers and a sister-in-law in the group.”

Ms. Moser said the group is always willing to entertain. For more information, contact her at 479-6900.

JUNIOR LEAGUE of Chattanooga’s third annual Kids in the Kitchen, a fun-filled day for children to learn about healthy eating habits and exercise, will be held on March 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1301 James Blvd. on Signal Mountain. Admission is free.

Activities will include educational games, yoga and Pilates, chef demonstrations and healthy snack ideas. There will be free gifts to the first 100 attendees.

The Junior League of Chattanooga is partnering with the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department/Step ONE’s Eat Smart Healthy Starts program, Thrasher Elementary, Erlanger hospital, several local businesses and restaurants and local dieticians and chefs to put on this year’s Kids in the Kitchen, according to a news release.

The event is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International and its member leagues. The program began in 2006 in an effort to address the rapid rise of childhood obesity and the associated health issues children have because of being overweight, according to a news release.
