A license plate flop

Those who consider the killing of unborn babies through abortion a “right” often claim that America is an overwhelmingly “pro-choice” nation.

But it was eye-opening to read some facts buried deep in a recent news article about pro-life versus “pro-choice” license plates. It seems that not very many Americans “choose” the “pro-choice” plates where they are available, but lots of people proudly pay extra to display pro-life plates.

To quote from The Associated Press: “Last year, Virginia became the 23rd state to approve the ‘Choose Life’ plate. The plates should be on the roads in Massachusetts, Delaware and North Dakota by the end of March, and efforts are under way in a dozen other states to get them approved … . Nationwide, more than 520,000 of the plates have been sold since 2000 … .”

“Those on the other side of the debate have yet to mount a coordinated response. Even in states where the (‘pro-choice’) plate is offered, it hasn’t sold well … . Hawaii was first with a ‘Respect Choice’ decal for plates in 2003, but lack of interest is threatening to halt its availability. A ‘Pro-family, Pro-choice’ plate is available in Montana, and Pennsylvania has a Planned Parenthood labeled plate. However, only 22 of those are active.”

For the record, we believe the purpose of license plates should be for identification of vehicles and for law enforcement purposes. But it is certainly interesting to see the kinds of plates people select — or don’t select — when the issue is killing the unborn.
