A bid to reward contractors or businesses who employ local workers and use local resources could be tabled tonight after more heated debate by City Council members on the measure.
Councilwoman Pamela Ladd told council members that instead of adopting an ordinance, she had found the city easily could slip the proposed practice into its purchasing manual.
“I think maybe this is a good medium,” she said.
The council voted 5-4 last Tuesday on first reading to adopt the measure. It is to come before the council again tonight for a second and final vote before it becomes law.
The ordinance gives preference to contractors or businesses who employ workers and resources within a 75-mile radius in the case of a tie bid.
“I think it’s better than a coin toss, and I will continue to say it’s better than a coin toss,” said Councilman Andraé McGary.
