The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team’s coaching staff returned to full strength Friday when Jamaal Fobbs accepted coach Russ Huesman’s offer to be the Mocs’ running backs coach, sources told the Times Free Press.
Huesman said he could neither confirm nor deny the hiring since it wasn’t yet official, but he did say he was no longer searching for a replacement for Jason McManus, who resigned last week.
Fobbs was an offensive administrative intern at Tennessee last season under former Vols coach Lane Kiffin. He has also been on the staffs at North Carolina A&T, Southeastern and LSU.
The New Orleans native was a multidimensional running back during his career at Oklahoma State (1997-2000). He rushed for 1,847 yards and had 73 career catches. Fobbs was also the Cowboys’ top kick returner for three seasons, and he was named honorable mention All-Big 12 as an all-purpose player by The Associated Press following his senior season.
Both Fobbs and Vanderbilt offensive graduate assistant Norval McKenzie interviewed for the job this week. Fobbs won’t have much time to settle in at UTC before spring practice, which starts Feb. 28.
