DALTON, Ga. – Clemencia Jimenez wants to know if the loud noise inside the carpet factory where she works can affect the baby she’s carrying.
On Friday, she also joined with a small group of Hispanic women trying to figure out the flavor of different baby foods just by looking at their colors. The labels of such tasty tidbits as peaches, green peas and turkey and gravy are covered up.
The women are part of a nine-week Spanish prenatal class – “Nurturing Program for Prenatal Families” – offered by the nonprofit City of Refuge in conjunction with the Family Nurturing Center of Georgia, a group that offers parenting training.
“We are going to discuss how (women) should properly take care of themselves through the pregnancy, how to nurture the baby and go over the different stages of the pregnancy,” class facilitator Iliana Avalos said. Classes are offered in English and Spanish.
The program is funded by a Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities grant, said Mrs. Avalos. The English class will start in a couple of weeks, she said.
