LaFAYETTE, Ga. — The operators of historic Chattooga Academy are looking for volunteers to guide tours of the newly revitalized building.

Known locally as John B. Gordon Hall, the building has had a long history. Built in 1836, the building has served as a school, a meeting place for civic groups and a government building.

Most famously, it served as Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s headquarters during the lead-up to the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. It also saw fighting in the Battle of LaFayette on June 24, 1864.

Catherine Edgemon, LaFayette’s Mainstreet and economic development director, said the revitalization of Gordon Hall is a chance for potential volunteers to gain knowledge, connect with the city’s past and meet people who share a love of local history.

“Guides will share LaFayette’s story with others, promote tourism, and provide a service to the community,” Ms. Edgemon said. “And for those who prefer to work on museum development, rather than serving as a guide, there will be opportunities to be involved, such as helping to set up displays or researching information to develop exhibits.”

Deep historic knowledge isn’t required to volunteer, she said, although some knowledge of local history would be helpful. Training will be provided.

Those interested in volunteering are asked to complete an application that will be kept on file so applicants may be contacted as needed.
