First snow? Exciting, but …

Snow is a four-letter word that always is exciting for many in the Chattanooga area, especially for kids. But there are reasons why snow is dreaded by others. Are we about to have our first significant snow of 2010?

It’s cold, and the forecast is for some “snow showers” today and “flurries” tomorrow. Will there be enough snow to build snowmen — and to cause real trouble? We’ll know in just a few hours.

But in any case, it’s cold enough to cause privation for some of our people, to cause a number of burst water pipes and home heating failures. Some of our people will need shelter, and the Salvation Army, Red Cross, some churches and others commendably are getting ready to help those in need.

We in our area are blessed with a generally temperate climate, but we have frequently changing weather conditions. Whatever comes won’t stay very long. Temperatures above freezing are expected before the weekend.

In the meantime, let’s be considerate of those in need and careful on the streets and highways for some possibly slick spots — and look forward to a little warming soon.

Remember: “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”
