Exactly what is the world supposed to think Iran plans to do with the 1,350 tons of uranium ore that intelligence reports say it is smuggling in from the nation of Kazakhstan?
Do we imagine that Iran merely wants to produce nuclear energy to power its homes, businesses and industries? That seems like an awful lot of trouble and effort for a country that is already rich in oil.
Unfortunately, the obvious reason why Iran would go to such lengths to acquire uranium is that it is feverishly pursuing its goal of building nuclear weapons, with which to at least menace and possibly attack Israel and U.S. interests in the Middle East. Its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has made no secret of his desire to wipe Israel off the map. And as an ally of Israel — a democracy in a sea of Muslim theocracies — the United States is hated by Iran, too.
Yet what is the “world community’s” reaction to the news of Iran’s secret, half-billion-dollar acquisition of uranium? Diplomats said the news “was heightening international concern about Tehran’s nuclear activities,” The Associated Press reported. The U.N. Security Council, after all, has “banned” Iran from importing such material.
OK, so what does the U.N. propose to do about the obvious flouting of its “ban”? Nobody seems to know. One official there said we mustn’t rush to conclusions. Perhaps we can expect yet another “resolution” against Iran by U.N. bureaucrats whose own nations are not in Iran’s sights.
That may make the bureaucrats feel they have “done something.” But it does nothing to slow or stop Iran’s building of nuclear weapons with the capacity to kill millions — nor to alter the crazy mindset of Iran’s vicious leaders.
