Icy roads caused the postponement of all four northwest Georgia wrestling dual tournaments until Monday.
As a result, coaches are scrambling to determine how the tournaments will be competed. For example, the 15-team Area 7-AAAA event at Woodland may have to go to a single-elimination format, according to tournament director Charlie Higdon of Woodland.
If administrators won’t allow the wrestlers to miss class Monday, the 7-AAAA tournament, where Cass and Northwest Whitfield are the top seeds, will start at 4 p.m. Per GHSA rules, all area tournaments must be completed by 11:30 p.m. Monday, meaning the tournament field may have to be cut to the top eight or 10 teams.
The other area tournaments will begin Monday morning, though formats are still being discussed. The 6-AAA event will begin at 9 at Southeast Whitfield, where defending champion LaFayette and Heritage lead a strong field. The 7-AA tournament at Gordon Central will begin at 10 with Sonoraville and Dade County the top seeds. The Area 6-A event at Bowdon, with Bremen and Gordon Lee the top seeds, had already been moved to Monday at 9 a.m.
