Lions’ Williams ‘sold on MTSU’

Despite a lot of attention from the Bluegrass State, Keon Williams still intends to wear the blue of Middle Tennessee State University.

With only three weeks remaining before national signing day, the interest in the Red Bank High School running back continues to grow with calls or visits by coaches from the University of Kentucky, Louisville and Western Kentucky.

“It’s funny how that’s happened, with so much attention from Kentucky schools,” Red Bank coach Tim Daniels said. “They’re all pretty interested, and they’ve stayed in contact for a while.”

UK assistant coach Randy Sanders recently visited the Red Bank campus for a sitdown with Williams.

However, Williams said it will be difficult for him to go back on his commitment to the Murfreesboro school.

“I really respect how MTSU has been behind me for so long,” Williams said. “They started recruiting me during my junior year, when I was having to sit out, and they’ve really shown me how much they want me.

“I spoke with Coach Sanders and he said they were interested in following up on me, but right now I’m pretty sold on MTSU. Really, I’m just ready for this whole process to be over.”

In his only season of varsity competition, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Williams rushed for 1,506 yards, averaging 8.4 per carry, and scored 32 touchdowns.

He said he will likely visit MTSU next weekend.

“I’ve spoken to all the coaches there and I know what they’re all about,” he said, “but this visit is to get a feel for the whole campus and what it will be like living there.

“I just want to make sure everything is right. I watched MTSU win their bowl game, and that just made me feel even more like it’s a program I want to be a part of.”

Williams said he is two points shy on the ACT of being fully qualified for NCAA Division I eligibility. He will retake the test on Feb. 6, three days after national signing day.

“Another reason I’m so solid with MTSU is their coaches have said they’re holding my scholarship until I get those last points I need to qualify,” he said.
