What about traffic cameras?

With millions of us driving cars and trucks on crowded streets and highways every day, we all want to be “safe” in traffic, avoiding fatal, painful and costly accidents.

That’s why we have speed laws, traffic lights, directional signs, lines on highways, etc.

But many people tend to fudge a little, getting into too big a hurry, running a few miles over posted speed limits and taking other chances.

As a result, we have traffic enforcement police officers, radar, and speed and intersection cameras.

But particularly in the uses of traffic cameras and radar, some people are uncomfortable. They insist such devices may not promote safety so much as they are just “gotcha” gadgets used to raise substantial money in fines.

That’s why some state and local officials and many motorists currently are expressing conflicting opinions about the subject.

We want safety. We don’t want “fee grabbing” — even if we grudgingly admit we may sometimes drive a few miles over speed limits or try to beat yellow or red lights at intersections.

So why don’t we all resolve just to slow down a little, especially at intersections, and avoid traffic dangers, cameras, radar and traffic fines?

That could make all of us a lot more comfortable — and safer.
