‘Sports’ — really?

“Sports” is the first part of the big word “sportsmanship.”

Americans love sports and honor sportsmanship. That’s why we have rules for every game, and officials to assure fair play by all.

But occasionally, we are troubled by news of “fixed” games, “doped” horses — and now by home run hitter Mark McGwire’s admission that he used banned steroids and human growth hormones when he set his then-record of 70 homers in 1998.

Now, he says, “I wish I had never played during the steroid era.”

How do you think Mr. McGwire will forever be remembered — as a big league home run king, or as a fellow who cheated?

In sports, or business, or politics, or whatever, wouldn’t it be better to be “just average” — and honest — than to be remembered for being crooked?
