Conductor changed for CSO weekend event

The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera has announced a change in its program.

The Times Free Press previously reported that guest conductor Alondra de la Parra would be leading the CSO in a selection of works featuring Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” tonight and Friday.

The CSO reports that Ms. de la Parra has been replaced by another guest conductor, Sarah Ioannides. Under Ms. Ioannides’ baton, the orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird 1919 Suite, Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 and Dmitriy Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.

“Once we found out she could come, we gave her the option of conducting a different program,” said Molly Sasse, executive director of the CSO. “All of our candidates had the option of picking the program they would conduct. That’s what she recommended doing.”

The CSO is currently searching for a conductor and music director to take over when Robert Bernhardt steps down in 2011. Ms. Sasse said Ms. Ioannides was the “first runner up” among conductors chosen by a selection committee.
