A small single-engine plane crashed while taking off from Collegedale Municipal Airport at 6:10 this morning, authorities said.

“I don’t know the reason for the crash,” said Amy Maxwell, spokeswoman for Tri-Community Fire Department, which responded to the crash.

Ms. Maxwell said the plane crashed about 75 yards from the runway. The single occupant pilot sustained minor injuries.

“He was able to leave the plane and go to a nearby house,” she said. He then returned to the plane where a small fire burned.

Firefighters contained the blaze, and the pilot was transported for medical care, she said.

An airport employee said there wasn’t much more information to release. The plane was a Cherokee 140 single engine.
