School probes misuse of funds

Hamilton County Schools officials are investigating a case of misuse of funds by the cheerleader booster club at East Hamilton School.

Chief Financial Officer Tommy Kranz said he was working to “connect the dots” after parents of cheerleaders raised questions about how money was accounted for.

“Nobody’s walked in with a smoking gun,” he said. “Questions were given to us on just the overall finances of the East Hamilton cheerleading account.”

No more details, including the amount of money involved, are being released because the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

School board member Linda Mosley said she was aware of the investigation but did not know details about the accusations.

Danielle Clark, spokeswoman for the school system, said the accusation from the parent group came on Dec. 7. Between holiday time off and snow days, officials are just getting under way with their investigation, she said.

“We’ve not had a lot of time to investigate it,” she said. “We’re just not prepared to make any statements.”

Mr. Kranz said he wanted to complete the investigation “as quickly as humanly possible.” He estimated it would be finished in the next seven to 10 days.
