Is it any great secret why our country has annual budget deficits of more than $1 trillion — and a total national debt of more than $12.1 trillion?
Not really.
We have huge deficits and an obscene national debt because Congress refuses to cut its unwise and often unconstitutional spending. With President Barack Obama’s blessing, Democrats in Congress passed the $787 billion “stimulus” last year — which failed to stimulate the jobs it was supposed to “create or save.” The money is gone and unemployment is still 10 percent.
And that is only one example. There is also the proposed, trillion-dollar-plus ObamaCare socialized medicine legislation, which no one seems to offer a clear, convincing way to pay for.
Meanwhile, reforms that would keep Social Security and Medicare solvent have been resisted at every turn by lawmakers, allowing their costs to continue to spiral, and unconstitutional spending on things such as Amtrak and farm subsidies continues without a letup. Then there are the billions of dollars that go to things such as music halls of fame, salmon research and lots of other pork projects that are hardly federal responsibilities.
