An 11-year-old boy accused of robbing his mother’s workplace at gunpoint – and at her urging – faces a charge of aggravated robbery, police said Wednesday.
His mother, Angela Evans, 32, also is charged with aggravated robbery. She is in the McMinn County Jail on $100,000 bond pending a Jan. 29 court hearing, court records show.
Detective Freddy Schultz said a child went to World Finance in Athens, Tenn., on Jan. 8, approached an employee with a gun and demanded money while his mother waited in the car.
The employee told police she was closing the loan agency on Decatur Pike when the boy arrived. She said she went back inside and got $80 to give him, Detective Shultz said.
The employee who was held at gunpoint is doing fine, and local employees are not worried that a similar incident will happen, said Natasha Holnes, a World Finance manager.
“It’s a one-time thing,” Ms. Holnes said.
Authorities linked the car’s license number to Ms. Evans and arrested her and her son Monday. Both admitted to what happened, Detective Shultz said.
“(The child) is in the custody of the father,” Detective Schultz said.
The boy is to appear in Juvenile Court on Monday, he said. If he is found guilty, he could be placed in state custody, the detective said.
