An unfortunate scandal

We should regret unfortunate events that adversely affect individuals, even if they have invited them and brought them on themselves by wrongful acts. We should be compassionate toward the innocent victims.

A case involving such situations has arisen involving former Democratic U.S. senator from North Carolina, unsuccessful presidential candidate and former vice presidential nominee John Edwards.

He rose from modest circumstances to become a highly successful lawyer, gaining wealth from his lawsuits before he gained the political spotlight. His wife sadly has suffered cancer. His political ambitions have been thwarted. Now there is scandal.

Sen. Edwards came forward this week to declare that he fathered a child in an extramarital affair during his presidential campaign effort. “It was wrong for me to ever deny she was my daughter,” he said, just ahead of the publication of a book by a former campaign aide who previously had taken the blame.

There should be sympathy for the innocent injured parties, though very little for him.
