Our University of Tennessee in Knoxville has been much in the news lately for such reasons as the changes in football coaches, whose teams regularly fill all 102,037 seats in Neyland Stadium with enthusiastic Big Orange fans.
And Coach Pat Summitt’s women’s basketball teams and Coach Bruce Pearl’s men’s basketball teams are among the big national newsmakers.
We should not forget, however, that there are more than 28,000 students at UT who are engaged in a wide variety of studies that will launch them on good careers that will benefit all of us in Tennessee and beyond.
Closer to home — and of great academic and economic benefit for the people of our area — there are about 10,000 students at our University of Tennessee at Chattanooga engaged in a wide variety of constructive studies.
We like to cheer at sports competitions. But we should never forget what important contributions our colleges and universities and their students make in the development of opportunities for our people throughout our state.
