MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Shelby County Commission has voted to give a $10 million funding boost to the financially strapped Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
The county’s annual budget contribution to The Med will rise from $27 million to $37 million.
Hospital officials said they will now try to find $32 million in additional money for each of the next five years. According to The Commercial Appeal, they plan to ask the Memphis City Council for help.
The Med is the only hospital in the region to provide expensive specialized services such as burn and trauma care, and a high percentage of its patients lack health insurance.
The 370-bed hospital has a $32 million annual shortfall.
