Ask a doc

Q: How can I keep up my plan to exercise regularly?

A: After a determined start to the “new year exercise regimen,” many people slack off or stop altogether. Tips to stay on track:

* Set a regular time every day to exercise; some of us like to work out first thing in the morning, others at lunchtime or right after work. Be consistent.

* Plan to exercise five to six day a week, so you’ll still get in at least three sessions if your hectic schedule or the weather interferes.

* Avoid after-work “screen time” (TV, DVD, computer) until you’ve exercised.

* Get a friend or family member to exercise with you, so you’re committed to each other.

* If you get bored walking alone, phone a friend while walking to pass the time.

* Vary your routine if you burn out easily. Try walking, a spin class, yoga, hikes on local trails, swimming, weightlifting, etc.

* Record your progress as number of days you exercise per week, not pounds lost day to day.
