A mix of snow and ice continues to fall on Chattanooga and surrounding areas, with city public works employees pouring brine on roads and monitoring weather and road conditions “around the clock” today and Saturday, Director of Citywide Services Jim Templeton said this afternoon.
WTVC NewsChannel 9 forecaster David Glenn said area residents are in for a “hodgepodge of precipitation,” since the smallest fluctuation in temperature can change the precipitation from snow to freezing rain or sleet.
“What concerns me is the heavier moisture,” Mr. Glenn said. “Some places might see moderate to heavy bursts. The accumulation factor will still be with us through the night.”
At 5 p.m., U.S. 27 North was bumper-to-bumper and basically not moving, motorists said. Market Street heading across the river to North Chattanooga was also a snarl.
Hixson Pike was moving, but cars were having a tough time making it up the S curve and some were stuck in the road, forcing the moving cars to slowly slip around them. The four-lane road was down to two lanes on the S curve, motorists said.
Motorists and law enforcement officials in North Georgia have reported dangerous, icy roads and extremely slippery conditions.
Both Roberts Mill Road and the W Road on Signal Mountain are closed due to weather conditions, according to Janice Atkinson, public information officer with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
Sequatchie County Highway Director Tommy Sims said U.S. Highway 127 is closed on the Sequatchie side and that roads throughout the county are snowy and dangerous.
“They’re making it through town, but I don’t see how,” he said.
