Last load of coal delivered at TVA’s Widows Creek plant

One of the final two coal cars inside the coal dumper, an awe-inspiring device that flips 140-ton coal cars upside to feed the plant.

TVA began construction on the Widows Creek Fossil Plant in 1950. Today, the plant continues operation as one of 11 coal-fired power plants, producing 60-percent of TVA's electricity.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is appealing an order that would require coal scrubbers to be installed on the six oldest units at the Widows Creek Fossil Plant near Stevenson, Ala.

In 2006, scientists will begin testing underwater strobe lights at Widows Creek to scare off fish that can clog water intakes for the plant. The technology could help hundreds of coal plants facing tougher Clean Water Act requirements. (AP Photo/TVA)
