Some of the top 12-and-under junior tennis players in the nation will be in action at the Champions Club today as the USTA National Open returns to the Scenic City.
The field of 64 boys and girls will begin play at 8 this morning. All competitors are scheduled to play two rounds of singles today — either two in the main draw or one in the main draw and one in the consolation bracket — along with a round of doubles.
The boys’ draw features three of the top 17 players in the nation. Top seed Abhin Sharma of Alpharetta, Ga., is ranked No. 1 in the South and No. 7 in the nation. Number 2 seed Alexander Del Corral of Doral, Fla., is ranked No. 14 in the nation, and 3 seed Bailey Showes of Bellaire, Texas, is ranked No. 17.
The girls’ draw doesn’t have as many players with high national rankings but should still be very competitive. The No. 1 seed is Chloe Michele Ouellet-Pizer of Chapel Hill, N.C. She’s ranked No. 7 in the South and No. 32 in the nation.
In the boys’ draw are three area players: Cooper Long, Taylor Burgan and Luke Plaisted. In the girls’ draw there are six: Stephanie Romanchik, Addie Henry, Corinne Spann, Lauren Carelli, Drew Hawkins and Lauren Collins.
