Residents displaced after duplex fire

Several Chattanooga residents have been displaced by a duplex fire caused by hot grease on a stove, police said.

Initial reports to police indicated that children were inside the burning apartment at 4012 Arbor Place Lane, but when responders arrived the children were safe outside, a police report said.

Firefighters found a neighbor inside the apartment attempting to put the fire out with a garden hose, police said. The man was escorted out of the building and no one else was inside.

Firefighters contained the fire to the kitchen. The damage is estimated at $10,000, including smoke and water damage to the apartment and smoke damage to the adjacent residence, police said. Both apartments were left without power from the fire.

American Red Cross volunteers were called to aid the displaced residents, the report said.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, police said. Fire investigator Lieutenant Henry McElvain said a child was heating up grease on the stove, and the grease got too hot and caught fire.
