A 6-year-old boy who was playing with a cigarette lighter started a house fire on Chamberlain Avenue on Sunday morning, according to Chattanooga Fire Deprtment spokesman Bruce Garner.
Several people were in the house when the fire was discovered, but all got out unharmed, Mr. Garner said.
Firefighters were dispatched to 2409 Chamberlain Ave. shortly before 10 a.m. They were able to contain the fire damage to the kitchen and the bedroom, which is the room where the boy was playing with the lighter, Mr. Garner said.
The rest of the house had smoke and heat damage.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called to provide assistance.
