Chattanooga: Complaint filed against District 8 commission candidate

Hamilton County Republican Party officials this afternoon submitted a complaint questioning the top fundraiser in the Hamilton County Commission races.

The complaint comes a week after reports that District 8 candidate Kenny Smith, a Democrat and Hamilton County Board of Education chairman, changed the address of a $5,000 campaign contribution from the Washington, D.C.-based International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union.

Records dated Jan. 15 show the money came from the union’s national office in Washington, but on April 24, Mr. Smith filed a revised campaign financial document identifying the union’s Chattanooga headquarters as the check’s source.

Correction fluid is evident on the second form.

“It looks illegal,” said Hamilton County Republican Party Vice Chairman Harold Coker, who filed the complaint. “He whited out. He tried to cover it up.”
