CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The task of writing police warrants on weekends soon may return to the Bradley County Juvenile Justice Department’s jurisdiction.
Circuit Court Clerk Gayla Miller told Bradley County commissioners this week that two weekend warrant writers quit in the face of a growing number of calls for warrants.
Returning the weekend warrant writing duties to the juvenile justice division means no extra expense for the county, she said, because the department has personnel on duty anyway.
“The weekend warrant writers come on Friday afternoon and stay until Sunday afternoon. They quit. And I understand why,” Ms. Miller said.
One writer was called out 23 times on Friday, she said. The writers were paid $100 per weekend and it was not economically feasible for them to stay on the job, Mrs. Miller said.
County Attorney Joe Byrd said the transfer has been reviewed by judges and the district attorney’s office.
The salary line item in her budget will be transferred to juvenile court, Mrs. Miller said. She, too, has been called out to write warrants in the early hours, she said.
The resolution will be on Monday’s County Commission agenda for a vote.
