FORT OGLETHORPE: 6th Cavalry Museum a window to history

If you are on vacation, Fort Oglethorpe has the perfect place to visit. We are home to the 6th Cavalry Museum. As I have noted before, we are rich in history. From 1903-1945, President Teddy Roosevelt, Gen. Joseph Pershing, President Franklin Roosevelt, Gen. George Patton, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bing Crosby all had the 6th Cavalry post on their itinerary. The post was home to the “Fighting 6th Cavalry” from 1919-1942 and officially closed on Dec. 31, 1947. The 6th Cavalry Museum is located on the Parade Ground on Barnhardt Circle where polo matches are held as well as parades, horse shows and band concerts. The museum tells the story of the 6th Cavalry from the Civil War to present-day operations. It is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. For more information, call 706-861-2860.
