Smokies jump on Lookouts

KODAK, Tenn. – Although the Chattanooga Lookouts made a late rally from an eight-run deficit Friday night, the Tennessee Smokies won their Southern League game 8-6 and outscored the visitors 28-11 in the three-game series.

Tennessee polished off the sweep by chasing another Lookouts starting pitcher from the game before he could last four innings. Timothy Sexton was the latest victim, allowing seven runs on 10 hits.

The Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Josh Vitters double to left field that scored Tony Campana. They broke the game open with a four-run third inning, which was highlighted by a Vitters two-run home run to left.

Kyle Russell was a bright spot for the Lookouts, going 3-for-4 with a sixth-inning homer to right that made it 8-1. The subsequent rally fell short for Chattanooga, 10-12 in the season’s second half.

The Lookouts begin a four-game series at Carolina tonight at 6:15. Aaron Miller (0-2, 2.40 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Lookouts, with Matt Fairel (3-3, 5.31) scheduled for the Mudcats
